So I’ve quickly come to love Chile. Despite the crazy weather, the lack of central heating, the obscene amount of white bread consumed daily, the stressful public transportation and the constant struggle of being a gringa, I have completely fallen in love.
This country is weird and impossible to understand. But as I grow older and experience more from life, I’m learning that that’s the case anywhere you go that isn’t home. So I’m making Chile my home. For the next 5 months I am going to flourish here, I can feel it. I’m surrounded by the most supportive host family I could have hoped for, the strongest group of friends that care and love each other so deeply, and a country that has nothing to offer but beautiful view after beautiful view.
I’ll go into a little bit more detail about the people I’ve met here so far! I live with the sweetest family in Vina; I’m not exaggerating. I have a fun loving madre, a brilliant padre, and a generous and hip host hermana (see mom I’m using Spanish!). My mom’s name is Gladys and I fell in love with her immediately! She’s bubbly, loves to dance and sing to American pop music, cooks amazing vegetarian meals and has completely embraced the status of “mother”. Two weeks in and she has already held me when I needed a motherly hug, given me inspiration life advice (that I understood in Spanish, Mom!), and cried alongside me when the going got rough. I already owe her so much and the adventure has just begun!
And don’t get me started about the beautiful souls that I have met within our program! From night adventures in Valpo to watching the sunset over Playa Caleta Abarca, to hunting down the best local coffee shop (check out the passionfruit pie!), these amazing people have proven themselves to be loving and lovable!
We’ve bonded so much over the past two weeks and I can’t wait to learn more about everyone I have met! My only complaint is that there isn’t enough time to meet everyone!
Just the other day we met the students taking a Spanish semester abroad while doing a scavenger hunt around the city!
Stay tuned for a Santiago update!
